I’m afraid it’s not going to be that easy though folks! TV plays a big part in what you can get your child to eat. Whilst it is illegal in my country to show fast food adverts on kid’s channels the other channels do not follow suit. You only have to take note of the amount of ‘toys’ McDonald’s offers with it’s Happy Meals to start getting the picture!

You want to install the importance of good nutrition for young children early on and condition them to these rules – without turning the dinner table into a battle zone!

By drilling down into these options now, you can change your kid’s future relationship with food and give them the best opportunity to grow up healthy and strong.

Developing Healthy Eating Habits

Children tend to enjoy certain foods and that is that – once they have found something they like they are stuck on it for the duration ( however long that may be! ). When it comes to the importance of good nutrition for young children the main challenge is going to be changing their minds. The Importance of Good Nutrition For Young Children - Kid eating jello

For example – my son loves ham sandwiches for lunch ( or breakfast in some cases! ) and sausage and chips ( fries ) for main meals. Whenever I’m eating out with him he will choose the same thing – sausage with chips ( or sausage with something potato based! ). It’s real hard work to twist his arm into trying something else – he is now 8 years old.

It’s important you act as a role model for your kids – don’t sit about stuffing Doritos into your mouth if you expect them to be eating vegetables ( it won’t work! ).

Below are a few handy tips for you to employ to promote healthy eating in your children…..

  • Time is of the essence – sounds a bit drastic doesn’t it? Well what I mean by this is set out a time for dinner every night and try your best to stick by it! You want them to be aware that the family is sitting down at the same time every night to enjoy each other’s company and also eat well together! Breakfast is another great time for a family meal – a good breakfast improves a child’s performance in school!
  • There’s no need to go out so many times a month to eat – kids don’t really like restaurants that much anyway! Try and cook a lot more meals at home to keep the food healthy. It sets a great example for kids about the importance of food and how it should be prepared correctly. I would recommend saving up your hard earned cash and only eating out on birthdays/special occasions.
  • Snacks – I am fully aware that most of you out there have your kitchen cupboards full of empty calorie snacks. This needs to change now! You want to get your kids used to more healthier options of snacks like fruit or whole grain selections – there are some very tasty alternatives out there at the moment if you take the time to look!
  • Don’t be to strict with this new food policy! Basically DON’T do what my parents used to do with me – insist I clean the plate before leaving the table! This will only set a mindset up of dread within the child when it comes to dinner time.
  • The importance of good nutrition for young children should be explained to them at some point. What I mean here is try your best to get the kids involved in the food activities more. Once you do this you can take the opportunity to point out the different health issues with each food type. Let them help with the shopping then once you arrive home let them help with the cooking of the meals. You may also want to take the opportunity to get them started with reading out food labeling.

By understanding the importance of good nutrition for young children you can gradually change your child’s way of thinking when it comes to food. What they learn today will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives….
